It can be a little alarming when your child loses a baby tooth earlier than expected. But did you know that baby teeth hold space for adult teeth? When one goes missing too soon, it can cause crowding or alignment issues later on.
That’s where space maintainers come in. These small devices play a bigger role in your child’s dental health than most people realize.

Why Baby Teeth Matter (Even If They Fall Out)
Baby teeth aren't just temporary. They guide adult teeth into the right place.
If a baby tooth is lost early due to decay or injury, the surrounding teeth can shift into the gap. This can block adult teeth from coming in properly. Crooked teeth, crowding, and bite problems are more likely if the space isn’t protected.
What Is a Space Maintainer?
A space maintainer is a custom-made device placed in the gap where the tooth used to be. It holds that space open so the adult tooth can grow in correctly.
There are two main types:
Fixed space maintainers, which stay in place
Removable ones, like a retainer
Your child’s dentist will choose the best option based on your child’s age, the tooth involved, and how soon the adult tooth is expected.

Does My Child Really Need One?
Not all early tooth loss requires a space maintainer. Your pediatric dentist will look at a few factors:
🦷 Did You Know? Leaving a gap untreated could lead to speech problems, bite issues, or longer orthodontic treatment later.
